News and Me

Question for week 4 task is “how often do you read news?”. Well, how often do I read news?

When I’m still in Jakarta, my family subscribes the daily newspaper and my father said to my sister and me that everyday we have to always AT LEAST browse through the pages and read the headlines and tittle, so we know what’s going on. It has become my habit every morning before I go to school, the paper always in the dining table and I skim through it and read the news that interests me while eating my nice breakfast my mom made. And also at night, my father and mother like to watch the evening news and sometime I sit with them. Well, telling this story makes me miss home a little bit, hiks :’( .

Now, I’m not home anymore. I don’t subscribe to the daily newspaper, there’s nobody here to remind me to read it like my father did, and nobody’s preparing breakfast for me to enjoy while I’m reading it! Hahahaha… I know that’s shouldn’t be a reason. But thank God to the high speed internet and blackberry on my hand, I have e-newspaper! Yeaay! However, for me, reading news from internet is not as convenience as read it in the paper. I like it better from the paper. Well, at least it keeps me update about what’s going on.

I rarely watch the news on tv when I’m in Indonesia, even less here. I know more about what’s going on in Indonesia than in Malaysia, because I prefer to read Indonesian news. But I try to be updated about news and current events in Malaysia and all around the world, at least the big one. I try to still follow my father’s advice.

I think it’s very important to be update. It’s good for my own so I have more open minded and intelligent mind. Moreover, I study in international university and my friends is from everywhere around the world. So I can have nice conversation with them and I know what’s going on in their country. And honestly, I don't want to look or feel stupid when people talk about something that I don't know about.

Theatre as a Media Form

Traditional Theatre
Movie theatre
Outdoor Theatre

The word "theatre" as derived from the Ancient Greek θέατρον (théatron, “a place for viewing”) and θεάομαι (theáomai, “to see", "to watch", "to observe”).

Theatre is a building where theatrical performance or a motion picture shows can be presented. It usually has rising tiers of seat for the audience. On the past, theatre only known for live performances, like musical, drama, opera, magician, or even speech, where the performers can interact with the audience.

However, nowadays the performance shown on the theatre is not always live, like the room for watching movies on the cinema is also a theatre. Some performance groups perform in non-theatrical spaces. Such performances can take place outside or inside, in a non-traditional performance space, and include street theatre, and site specific theatre. Non-traditional venues can be used to create more immersive or meaningful environments for audiences. They can sometimes be modified more heavily than traditional theatre venues, or can accommodate different kinds of equipment, lighting and sets.

How theatre communicates the message to audience is, I think, depends on the show shown. If the show is drama or movies or opera, the message is usually very clear, it has direct message or single message that usually all the audiences will understand. The message is the moral from the show itself. But if it’s a dance show, or a magic show, or a musical show, the message is depends on how the audience feels about the show. Different feeling can interpret different message. However, all the show that is shown on the theatre is usually just a media from the producer or the creator to deliver the message to us, except it is a lecture or a speech, then the message is directly delivered by the person itself.

  • Qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of, or to interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them (Denzin 1994)Qualitative research is intended to penetrate to the deeper significance that the subject of the research ascribes to the topic being researched. It involves an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its subject matter and gives priority to what the data contribute to important research questions or existing information. • Qualitative research is a method of inquiry employed in many different academic disciplines, traditionally in the social sciences, but also in market research and further contexts.[1] Qualitative researchers aim to gather an in-depth understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making, not just what, where, when. Hence, smaller but focused samples are more often needed than large samples.
